News of recent meetings

  • Ian Spencer22nd October 09
Talk by Ian Spencer - designer maker.
Ian works from a workshop in a back streets of Kennington near the Oval. In his talk he demonstrated his enthusiasm and drive for wood and how he is developing an individual style of his own. He showed us some images of fascinating pieces of furniture that he has produced.

His interest in wood, its colour and texture is self evident by the excuses he finds to mix and use different and contrasting timbers. Look at his web site and see the chair and tables but also look at the other items that show a lot of attention to detail.

Spencer TalkHe brought several pieces with him most notably the blocked wood chair featured in the Oct/Nov 09 issue of British Woodworking magazine. The chair is called "Rocapina", which is a rock formation on the island of Corsica. Ian describes his approach as seeking order in chaos and showed examples he has observed in nature.

We have heard from Ian to the effect that he has sold his chair to a collector in Switzerland.
